RT, REAL-TIME
A transaction-oriented database management system in which transactions are posted immediately to the master database. Contrast this with transactions posted to a temporary database and journal file for later batch mode updating of the master database. Interactive user or device activity where data exchange with another device is asynchronous and controlled by the sender, independent of the status of he receiver. An event-driven multithreaded, multiprocessing computer operating system that supports real-time I/O and prioritized, immediately serviced (hard) input interrupts. Real-world events cause inputs that trigger interrupts that immediately dispatch drivers that respond to the input data, allowing the system to immediately react to the real-world events. A computer system with a real-time OS required for use in process control environments, e.g., nuclear power generation. The system may also be used for non-control, general processing applications. Contrast with On-Line.
