Layer 6 in the OSI Reference Model, this layer is responsible for the representation of information to the end user. This includes providing syntactic compactibility with code and format transformations where necessary. Other functions include compression and encryption (and the reverse) for the transmission. This layer, along with Layers 5 and 7, reflects the end-user sub-system.
