POP
A local connection point to a telephone company, long distance carrier, or network service provider. A TCP/IP protocol used by single-user hosts to retrieve email from a mail server. POP2, port 109, requires the use of SMTP. POP3, port 110, may be used with or without SMTP. Most email clients use POP3 or IMAP4.
