Often thought of as a single protocol, actually a suite of Transport Layer protocols that enhances NetBIOS services and facilitates peer-to-peer communications on a LAN. Used in early LAN-sharing and workgroup NOSs, it is still available in later Windows OSs and can be installed with or instead of the more frequently used TCP/IP stack.
