MD5
A one-way hash algorithm created by Ronald Rivest to calculate a secure message digest that can also be used for sender authentication. The digest encrypted with a private key becomes a digital signature. Decrypting with the corresponding public key authenticates the message and the sender. Using a one-way hash, it is extremely difficult to recover the original message even from an unencrypted digest.
