HOP
One connection (between two devices that can delay forwarding a signal) in a string of such connections linking two networks end points. A path from a sender to a reciever is a series of hops - jumps between intermediate router, gateways, or end points. The more hops, the longer the time to send data from sender to reciever. A direct connection between sender and receiver is called a 1-hop connection.
