FM
The modulation of a sinusoidal AC carrier signal in which the frequency or phase angle of the carrier is caused to depart from the carrier frequency by an amount directly proportional to the instantaneous value of some characteristics, such as the amplitude, of a much lower frequency modulating signal. Compare with AM.
