CONTROL (NOUN)
In IT technology, a way something works (e.g., Media Access Control) or the progams, specifications, or facilities that allow something to function. Specifically in object-oriented technologies, a control is an object in a dialog box, window, menu (e.g., scroll bars, buttons, etc.), or an OLE or ActiveX object. In business, audit, and security activity, the way something does not work, unless specifically allowed. A control is a policy, practice, or procedure that restricts allowable activity to prescribed limits with reasonnable assurance of success. To be a control, a policy, practice, or procedure must be actively monitored, deviations from the prescribed limitss must be detected, and corrective action must be taken in a timely fashion.
