CIRCUIT SWITCHING
An OSI Layer 1 and 3 voice and data transmission technology in which a real electrical connection between the calling and called stations is established on demand for exclusive use of the circuit until the connection is released. Layer 3 is used to specify the desired network end point, the called station, and the route to be connected. When the route is physically connected, Layer 1 is the highest layer present along the circult, allowing Layer 2 end-to-end visibility. No error checking within the network is done for a circult switched connection. Compare with packet switching.
